DESCRIPTION:North Brooklyn’s First Earth Day Festival!\n\n\nBeginning in 2008\, Go Green! Greenpoint! was the first Earth Day Festival to take place in North Brooklyn. Since then\, this event has become an annual staple of community life. Each year\, Go Green! Greenpoint! has grown in participating organizations and businesses\, and attendance. Our event includes education with schools\, community groups\, and companies displaying research\, science and art projects that enhance our appreciation and understanding of our environment. Go Green offers Greencycle Swap to recycle and reuse clothing\, shoes\, books\, toys and more. The event hosts a green school contest\, wellness with yoga\, zumba and other classes\, vendors with enviro-friendly merchandise\, and live music and dance performances. \nEach year\, Go Green! Greenpoint has grown in participating organizations and businesses\, and attendance.  This year’s event includes a school sustainability challenge\, dance performances\, educational and scientific displays concerning our environment\, a Greencycle Swap\, a costumed volunteer park clean up\, and a speaker series focused on engageing our communities\, Food\, Greening Our Schools\, and Open Spaces. May 23\, NYC Transition activists and permaculturists built a community garden with raised beds\, alongside Rockaway community members building back from Sandy devastation. Walls of the beds are made of wooden boards donated by Build it Green\, and burlap bags from coffee roaster White Coffee filled with wood chips from NYC Parks Dept.\, and filled with plants donated by Home Depot. This method can be used to create gardens on other urban sites anywhere with soil in need of remediation. DESCRIPTION:The CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities will be hosting a public meeting for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to discuss the Community Risk and Resilience Act and projections of sea level rise.  The meeting is open to the public and the Hunter College community is encouraged to attend. \nThe public will have an opportunity to comment on projections of future sea-level rise at four public\ninformation and listening meetings organized by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The Community Risk and Resiliency Act (CRRA)\, signed by Governor\nAndrew M. Cuomo in September 2014\, requires DEC to adopt a regulation establishing official state sea-level rise projections by January 1\, 2016. CRRA also requires DEC and other state agencies to develop guidance on implementation of CRRA by January 1\, 2017. DEC staff will present background on the Community Risk and Resiliency Act\, and scientific information DEC is considering as it develops its regulation to establish sea-level rise projections. Participants will have the opportunity to provide additional input for DEC’s consideration before it proposes a draft sea-level rise projection regulation. SUMMARY:Rockaway Health Festival and Transition-Permaculture Convergence
DESCRIPTION:A full day of local and Mid-Atlantic regional Transition and Permaculture exhibits and resiliency presentations!  \nUrban resources for health\, sustainability and resilience\, including: urban agriculture / soil remediation /food preservation / water catchment / emergency preparedness / solar energy / composting/ bee keeping /aquaponics / city-to-valley food system connections/ Transition Neighborhoods\, and much more.    \nMusic and cultural performances reflecting Rockaway’s diverse communities.  No charge to attend. \nResilient Far Rockaway sets an example for coastal communities and cities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. As climate change accelerates\, extreme weather events will become more frequent. Rockaway residents’ commitment to recovery using the Transition Towns process is an example for all extreme weather-exposed Mid-Atlantic communities. \nCommunity Services of Far Rockaway at Battalion Pentecostal Assembly\, a leader in post-Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts\, the Mid-Atlantic Transition Hub (MATH)\, Transition NYC\, and the Canary Project\, are partnering to produce the Rockaway 4th Annual Community Health Fair and Transition Convergence on June 27\, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.\n \nThe Convergence will promote local climate change resilience\, health\, community-building\, neighborhood food security and production\, renewable energy\, energy conservation\,and creative waterfront restoration. Health resources will include: free blood pressure screening; glucose\, spinal and HIV testing\, complemented by herbal medicine\, soap and cosmetic product exhibitors\, and a Zumba class. Free lunch will be provided for Rockaway residents while supplies last. Enjoy great food\, music\, fun and learning activities for the entire family. The Convergence will feature a Canary Project art exhibition: Re-Claimed: Stories from the Storm; Recovery and Re-Building Life in the Rockaways. This is an exhibition of poignant stories\, objects and images of what was lost in the storm and was gained in the aftermath as told by the people of the Arverne neighborhood of the Rockaways. \nTransition presentations and exhibits include: urban agriculture\, permaculture (a high-yield\, chemical free landscape and garden design system)\, contaminated soil remediation\, food preservation and water catchment systems. They will be joined by resilience resources such as ham radio systems for emergency communications\, NYC Emergency Management’s Community Emergency Response Team\, NY State and National Grid’s energy conservation and solar programs; green jobs training programs; advocates for bicycling\, composting\, bee and chicken keeping and aquaponics. Rockaway initiatives will include Ocean Bay Community Development Corporation and local activist groups. Guests may participate with Rockaway Seedball advocates in exciting waterfront restoration by spreading mudballs containing seeds of native vegetation to replant and stabilize sand dunes. Families and children will enjoy a host of activities\, music and cultural performances reflecting Rockaway’s diverse communities. \nTransition Neighborhoods: grassroots\, neighbor-led community organizing \nThe Transition movement is a neighbor-led community organizing response to climate change\, resource depletion and financial instability\, with over 1\,100 local initiatives in 44 countries and over 150 in the US. It starts with a series of small group meetings. The Transition Neighborhoods process\, adapted to the specific needs of NYC and other urban communities\, invites neighbors to strengthen their sense of place\, build relationships as they map their neighborhood’s current state of resiliency\, looking at food\, energy\, water\, waste\, consumption and transportation. The goal is to proactively move communities away from reliance on fossil fuels\, toward a much more resilient\, improved quality of life. Transition Groups are forming in the Upper West Side\, Brooklyn\, Washington Heights\, the Rockaways\, and other NYC neighborhoods. \nIn May\, Transition activists and Rockaway residents built a community garden on a lot next to the area where the June 27th Convergence will take place using an innovative combination of donated materials\, and led by permaculture designers.
