DESCRIPTION:On June 15\, 1904\, General Slocum\, an excursion boat\, caught fire in the East River. The blaze resulted in the deaths of over 1000 passengers\, mostly women and children\, making it New York City’s worst disaster until the 9/11 attacks of 2001.  \nAlmost all of the passengers lived in a German-American enclave in the East Village known as Kleindeutchland. The grief-stricken neighborhood never recovered from the tragedy\, and many survivors resettled to Yorkville\, a growing new German-American community on the Upper East Side. \nOn May 18\, join NYC H2O as they sail aboard the historic tugboat Pegasus\, retracing and recounting the ill fated last voyage of General Slocum. DESCRIPTION:The conversation around Hurricane Sandy has shifted from rectifying the storm’s aftermath to the city’s future in disaster preparedness. City leaders have proposed several changes to infrastructure that could dramatically alter our cityscapes: building a barrier to block the city from water surges; using eminent domain to declare no-build zones; creating wetlands to absorb the water; making drastic changes to zoning; and making major changes to building codes. The common theme is that the cities cannot just be re-built—they have to be re-built differently. \nOn May 20th\, the Community Advisory Board (CAB) of New York Public Radio offers the public an opportunity to learn about and discuss the scope\, ramifications\, and costs of these proposed changes. SUMMARY:WATER_WORKS Competition Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Gowanus by Design is proud to present the winning entries from Water_Works\, its second annual design and planning competition. The intent of the competition was to provide a new community resource that will occupy the site of the Douglas Degraw pool with a Combined Sewer Overflow [CSO] retention facility. \nThere were over 250 entries submitted from around the world and the jury was tasked to select nine winners in the areas of architectural design\, community programming\, and urban ecology. The award-winners along with other selected entries will be exhibited at the gallery. \nBased on recent studies\, it is likely that the Douglass and Degraw Street pool and the adjacent Thomas Greene Playground will be demolished in order to properly remediate the heavily contaminated soil below the pool\, which is the site of the former Fulton Manufactured Gas Plant site. The competition focused on how the post-industrial development of this contaminated site in the canal watershed offers the challenge of rethinking how a new community resource can become an agent for the area’s continued renewal. \nVisit the website for more information.
