SUMMARY:FIGMENT NYC Weekend on Governor's Island
DESCRIPTION:You can play a round of mini-golf on a very unique course from June 7 through Sep 21. Courtesy: newyork.figmentproject.org\nFIGMENT is a free art event that is 100% volunteer-powered. On June 7th and 8th\, FIGMENT New York will be kicking off another amazing summer with participatory art projects in every imaginable medium on Governors Island in New York Harbor. Take the ferry from Manhattan or Brooklyn and enjoy one of New York’s best kept secrets\, a 30 acre newly-renovated park with panoramic views of the city and the Statue of Liberty. Visitors to FIGMENT are invited to play minigolf\, relax in the City of Dreams Pavilion\, explore interactive sculptures\, and play in the TreeHouse all season long. \nWe’re especially excited for the Governor’s Cup in the City of Dreams Pavilion. In this sculpture\, inspired by tape-lace crochet\, used plastic cups\, saved from discard from throughout the city\, are bound by zip-ties into a densely-knit serpentine structure. The configuration forms an outdoor room\, shimmering in the sun and echoing with breeze-driven sound. It also calls attention to our disposable cup crisis. The recycling rate for plastic cups is negligible. After any given event in New York City\, hundreds of disposable cups get left behind to sit in landfills. This year\, the Governor’s Cup Assembly Team committed to saving 30\,000 cups from the landfill and finding new ways to save other plastic cups from being tossed aside as trash.   \nFerry schedule and directions here.

SUMMARY:Help Build a Citizen Bio-Swale
DESCRIPTION:From outdoorfest.org\nTHE PROJECT \nOrganic cotton clothing company Loomstate is teaming up with innovative landscaping firm\, Open Source Landscape and local environmental education and service organization\, Lower East Side Ecology Center to heal NYC’s waterways. On June 4th – 6th\, from 10:00am to 5:00 pm\, the group is going to transform a water-logged and Sandy-destroyed street tree bed into a climate change-adapted\, bio-swale rain garden. \nTHE BACKGROUND \nThe inspiration behind the project sprung from a brainstorming session with the environmental gurus at LES Ecology Center and Loomstate. They set out to solve the problem of how to prevent millions of gallons of raw sewage from being discharged into the East and Hudson rivers each year due to NYC’s antiquated combined sewage overflow system. The answer was to organize a citizen effort to build dynamic permeable surfaces called bio-swales and lead watershed tours to educate the public on the city’s water issues. Simone Frazier of Open Source Landscape and participant on the tour was inspired to help\, and led the effort to transform the 70 foot tree bed in Catherine Slip\, NYC into a beautiful water management garden. The effort has paid off and this June the group along with volunteers will be constructing a larger bio-swale with the help of funding from Hugo Barreca President of the Double R Foundation and with support from Citizens Committee. \nSIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER \nEach day will be split into two volunteer shifts\, which could include lifting\, shoveling\, planting\, and getting your hands dirty.  Between the shifts there will be an hour break for lunch. Click to register for specific days and shifts. \nWHAT TO BRING \nPlease wear sneakers or work boots and clothing that you won’t mind getting dirty. Bring work gloves if you have (extra will be provided on-site)\, apply sunscreen\, and bring any water/food you will require.  Food and drink will not be provided\, but there are bodegas nearby.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Submerged Motherlands
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nBrooklyn-based artist Swoon celebrates everyday people and explores social and environmental issues with her signature paper portraits and figurative installations. She is best known for her large\, intricately-cut prints wheat pasted to industrial buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan. \nFor this exhibition\, Swoon creates a site-specific installation in our rotunda gallery\, transforming it into a fantastic landscape centering on a monumental sculptural tree with a constructed environment at its base\, including sculpted boats and rafts\, figurative prints and drawings\, and cut paper foliage. \nOften inspired by contemporary and historical events\, Swoon engages with climate change in the installation as a response to the catastrophic Hurricane Sandy that struck the Atlantic Coast in 2012\, and Doggerland\, a landmass that once connected Great Britain and Europe and that was destroyed by a tsunami 8\,000 years ago. \nSwoon studied at Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, and has become active in such humanitarian activities as Konbit Shelter Project\, which helps Haitians create sustainable buildings\, and Transformazium in Braddock\, Pennsylvania\, which works with local residents to revitalize their community. \nSwoon: Submerged Motherlands is organized by Sharon Matt Atkins\, Managing Curator of Exhibitions\, Brooklyn Museum.
