SUMMARY:Exhibition: Submerged Motherlands
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nBrooklyn-based artist Swoon celebrates everyday people and explores social and environmental issues with her signature paper portraits and figurative installations. She is best known for her large\, intricately-cut prints wheat pasted to industrial buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan. \nFor this exhibition\, Swoon creates a site-specific installation in our rotunda gallery\, transforming it into a fantastic landscape centering on a monumental sculptural tree with a constructed environment at its base\, including sculpted boats and rafts\, figurative prints and drawings\, and cut paper foliage. \nOften inspired by contemporary and historical events\, Swoon engages with climate change in the installation as a response to the catastrophic Hurricane Sandy that struck the Atlantic Coast in 2012\, and Doggerland\, a landmass that once connected Great Britain and Europe and that was destroyed by a tsunami 8\,000 years ago. \nSwoon studied at Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, and has become active in such humanitarian activities as Konbit Shelter Project\, which helps Haitians create sustainable buildings\, and Transformazium in Braddock\, Pennsylvania\, which works with local residents to revitalize their community. \nSwoon: Submerged Motherlands is organized by Sharon Matt Atkins\, Managing Curator of Exhibitions\, Brooklyn Museum.

SUMMARY:FitCity 9: Promoting Physical Activity through Design
DESCRIPTION:AIA New York\, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene\, is holding the eighth-annual FitCity 8 conference at the Center for Architecture on Monday\, June 24\, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (and via a livestream available here). \nSpeakers and participants will examine how design of the built environment can create opportunities for increasing physical activity and access to healthier food and beverages. SUMMARY:CORPORATE POWER GRAB: Can Democracy Survive?
DESCRIPTION:Join Trade Justice NY Metro to Learn More And Help Pass A NYC Resolution Against Fast Track.  Global trade agreements that are “Fast Tracked” through Congress\, which is what supporters intend for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)\, harm us in ways we don’t know about until it is too late. Like NAFTA\, the TPP will outsource jobs\, hurt our environment\, threaten food safety and access to medicines\, limit internet freedom and roll back recent Wall St. regulations. The “investor-state” provision will also severely limit the rights of participating countries\, including the US\, to pass their own laws and reforms in these and other areas. If we do\, we could be sued by large corporations for damaging their “future expected profits.” \nMODERATOR: Ron Kuby\, Co-host of ABC Radio’s “Curtis and Kuby”\nKEYNOTE: Honorable Helena Rosenthal\, NYC Council Member\, 6th District\, Manhattan\nSPEAKERS:\n• Kian Frederick\, Nat’l Field Director\, Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch\n• Mitch Jones\, Director Common Resources Program\, Food & Water Watch\n• Jennifer Flynn\, Director\, Health Global Access Project\n• José Schiffino\, Working Families Party and Chair\, Fair Trade Committee NYC\, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement\n• Reverend Stephen Phelps\, former Senior Interim Minister\, Riverside Church\n• Malú Huacuja del Toro\, Author
