SUMMARY:The Hattie Carthan 9th Annual Food Heritage Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Hattie Carthan Community Garden cordially invites you to attend: \nThe Hattie Carthan 9th annual Food Heritage Festival\nJune 15th 2013 Time: 12:00 noon to 9pm. \nThis year’s theme Our Food Heritage: Foods from the African Diaspora \nOne of the most interesting things about the food of the African diaspora is how closely it connects the people who prepare it\, often without them even realizing it. There are several characteristics that almost all cuisines of the African diaspora share: seasoning techniques; cooking techniques such as stewing and frying; the prevalence of starchy mashes or porridge’s eaten with stews and soups or on their own; Among African\, Latin and Caribbean cuisines\, ingredients are nearly identical\, most likely due to the similarity in climate. Tropical foods such as plantains\, cassava\, coconuts and palm oil are staples in West African and Afro-Brazilian cooking. The distinctive ingredients of southern cuisine\, as well as the styles of cooking them\, have been common for centuries in Africa. We invite you to come meet our gardening pioneers and taste our Rich Heritage in the bountiful garden! \nAll dishes are home made – Much of our greens and salads are grown in the garden \nMeat Plate $ 8 – 3 choices of meat   Vegetarian Plate $6    Home made pies $1.50 \nSorrel Drink $1   Roast corn $2   Sage Sausages $2   Chicken foot Souse $3 bowl\n* BBQ galore * Live blues music * Farm animals *

SUMMARY:Outdoor Rise Festival: June 17 - June 23
DESCRIPTION:  \nPhoto: Outdoor Rise \nAs environmentalists turn toward cities as the principal model of a sustainable future\, many frighten that the Great Outdoors will be left out of the picture. On June 17\, Discover Outdoors kicks off Outdoor Rise\, a week of outdoor adventures that will satisfy New Yorkers itching for an escape\, and perhaps quell the fears of the skeptical. \nThe festival will take participants kayaking in the Hudson River\, bouldering in Central Park\, and mountain-biking in Queens among other high-endurance activities. For nature-lovers that tend toward lower-endurance activity\, the festival will also host daily yoga classes\, lectures\, films\, and a photography workshop atop Mount July. Join Discover Outdoors for a getaway in a city that offers the best in outdoor adventures and the promise of a sustainable future. \nVisit the website for the events calendar.

SUMMARY:Designing for Flood Risk
DESCRIPTION:City Planning Commissioner Amanda M. Burden\, Hon. AIA New York will introduce a new report that will help New York City and other urban waterfront communities to improve their resilience to coastal flood risks and promote livable\, sustainable neighborhoods. \nDesigning for Flood Risk identifies key principles to guide the design of new buildings in flood zones to promote construction that can not only withstand coastal flood events\, but also supports the vibrancy of the urban public realm. Recognizing the distinct character and needs of higher-density urban environments\, the report provides recommendations for how regulations and individual project design can incorporate these principles. \nThe analysis and collaboration with the design community conducted as part of Designing for Flood Risk also strongly shaped the Department’s proposed Flood Resilience Text Amendment\, which would enable buildings to be constructed and retrofitted for flood resilience based on the latest flood maps issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)\, while mitigating the potential negative effects of elevated buildings on ground-floor activity and quality of the streetscape. This proposal began the public land use review process on May 20\, 2013.\nSpeakers \nAmanda M. Burden\, FAICP\, Hon. AIA\, Chair\, City Planning Commission\nThaddeus Pawlowski\, Urban Designer at NYC Department of City Planning and Advisor at the Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations\nLance Jay Brown\, FAIA\, DPACSA\, Co-Chair\, AIANY Design for Risk and Reconstruction Committee\nWinka Dubbeldam\, Assoc.
