NYC Bike Share, the largest bike sharing program in the U.S. is scheduled to launch this July, just a little over two months away. It will consist of 10,000 bikes and 600 stations located throughout the city.

Although the plan has been in the works for some time, new details have recently been revealed. This past week, 54 of the planned bike stations were revealed by the NYCDOT at a Community Board 4 meeting, as well as logistics for how the Bike Share would realistically fit into certain busy locations: namely, Penn Station, Grand Central, and Port Authority.

To accommodate the swarms of people that frequent these commuter hotspots, the NYCDOT and Alta Bicycle Share have announced that they will increase both the number and size of the stations there. While the standard NYC station will hold around 30 bikes, Penn Station will have 180 docks, and Port Authority 140.

According to Streetsblog, “the most important sites in New York City’s bike-share system are, fittingly, super-sized. With the biggest transit system in the country, it’s only appropriate to give those riders the biggest bike-share stations for the last mile of their trip.”

Since the announcement of the NYC Bike Share last year, NYCDOT and Alta Bicycle Share have made efforts to engage the community in planning the program by holding demonstrations, open houses, and workshops. You can read more about these community engagement methods in one of our previous posts here.
