Surfing NYC

One day in early September, a friend and I had a crazy idea. “Let’s go surfing!” I said on a whim, and she said “Yes!” Learning to surf had been on my list of life goals. I thought that I would have to wait until I moved to Southern California to accomplish this. Fortunately for me, I didn’t have to go that far. After scouring the weather reports for a week, my friend and I found an 80 degree semi-overcast day that looked perfect for our first surfing attempt. We made the trek to Far Rockaway beach where we were pleasantly surprised to find a fairly calm day with hardly any beach goers. After an hour and half surf lesson, I won’t pretend that I can surf. I will say that I am on the brink of a new addiction. Rolling  with the waves, pushing the surfboard out into the ocean, tasting the salt water, the wind blowing through my hair and standing up for the first time to ride a wave right to the shore. This is the life I could get used to, and it’s here in New York City.
