A “business plan” traditionally refers to a lengthy, bound, and laminated document, written before a business launches, detailing its every element with charts and research and projections. But in today’s social venture environment business plans must constantly evolve, and plenty of startups never write one at all. So what’s the deal? How should a social venture or nonprofit know if it needs a business plan? When is the document ready for presentation? How long should it be and what needs to go in it? In this class we will attempt to answer these questions without limiting ourselves to a single format, instead relying on real-world examples and active class participation to convey core concepts.
