A Changing Landscape: Public Space and the New Administration

In recent years, the profession of landscape architecture appears to have taken the lead from urban design, planning, and even architecture as the primary generator of public space in New York City. The Bloomberg administration was seen as supportive of design, focused on new forms of urban space such as bicycle lanes and small private parks integrated into public space. Was public participation left out of the Mayor’s equation? What about the private financing of public spaces?
Focused on public housing and related initiatives, Mayor De Blasio’s administration seems to have a different outlook, perhaps viewing design as more of a middle-class prerogative concentrated in certain areas of the city, and therefore less of a priority. If so, what is happening to Bloomberg’s legacy in the design arena? In what is sure to be a lively discussion, this program will poll several of New York’s landscape design leaders for their opinions on these issues and how they are playing out across the five boroughs.
