APOPS@MAS presents Hester Nights and “The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces”

August 15, 2013 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Free

Join The Municipal Art Society of New York on Thursday, August 15 at 6:30 PM at Hester Nights, in the Eventi Hotel Open Air Plaza 851 6th Avenue with entrances on both W. 29th and 30th Streets, for a special FREE screening of the 1980’s urban planning cult classic “The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces” a film by William H. Whyte, produced by MAS.

Bring your friends and enjoy the film along with plenty of food and drink available for purchase from local vendors.  This event is part of MAS’s ongoing work with Advocates for Privately Owned Public Space (APOPS@MAS).

The screening will begin at 6:30 PM but the Hester Nights artisanal food market opens at 5:00 PM.

About the Film
This witty and original film is about the open spaces of cities and why some of the spaces work for people while others do not. Beginning at New York’s Seagram Plaza, one of the most well-used open areas in the city, the film proceeds to analyze why this space is so popular and how other urban oases, both in New York and elsewhere, measure up.

About APOPS@MAS
The Municipal Art Society has long been a steward of New York’s public spaces, including the city’s privately owned public spaces (POPS)—plazas, arcades, and other indoor and outdoor areas created by municipal zoning agreements with private developers beginning in 1961. POPS contribute to the city’s livability, given their valuable location in some of the city’s densest neighborhoods.

Visit apops.mas.org to participate through our new website, created in collaboration with Harvard University Professor Jerold Kayden.

This event is FREE but registration is requested.
