Summer Solstice Celebration
June 21, 2015 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FreeSunday, June 21, 2015 | 5 pm – Dusk
Bring your friends and family to Socrates’ Solstice festival to welcome the summer and celebrate the longest day of the year! Be creative in Solstice art-making workshops presented in partnership with Free Style Arts Association, Materials for the Arts, and The Noguchi Museum; get your face painted by Agostino Arts; participate in a special Solstice ritual performed by Urban Shaman Mama Donna; have a picnic; and enjoy the view as the sun sets over the Manhattan skyline!
Additionally, join composer and instrument builder Paul Rudolph and his percussion group GLANK, as they offer an instrument-making workshop and interactive performance utilizing unique percussion inventions made from recycled materials such as tuned saw blades, LP tanks, motorcycle gears, artillery shells and more. Energetic music, numeric clapping patterns, anonymous performers and *you* in a lab coat and GLANK mask!
Concert: 7:30 – 9 pm
This season’s Solstice festival will culminate with a live concert by the Queens Symphony Orchestra that will leave our audience with a feeling of amazement. Founded in 1953 by Maestro David Katz, the Queens Symphony Orchestra (QSO) is currently in its 63rd season and is the borough’s only professional orchestra. The QSO plays classic and innovative orchestral music in order to inspire and ignite a passion for life in individuals of all ages.
Presented in partnership with Queens Symphony Orchestra.
