Walling Off What Matters: Advocating for Holistic Waterfront Resilience in NYC
February 23, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Free100 Days Of Impact with Red Hook NY Rising Community
The building of walls has been a topic of conversation over the past year during the election season, but the urgent issues around climate change have been strikingly absent. These two issues are actually inextricably linked; if we are to build walls, and engage in economic revitalization then such infrastructure must be focused on delta cities, that are facing serious impacts from sea level rise over the next 100 years.
There are thousands of miles of waterfront to be designed and planned and protected in advance of the next 100 years. Nuclear weapons are not going to protect us, but “walls” of flood projection will. And it can create many new jobs in addition to a whole new job sector, the Resilient Labor Force. But how do we do this when the powers that be state it is too expensive and the process is too complex?
This workshop will look at several potential funding / governing solutions, such as creating an RMIA (Resilient Manufacturing and Maritime Industrial Area), creating hyper local Resilient Advocates and integrating community based organizing.
The workshop is looking to gain feedback on improving such methods and to connect local waterfront community organizations dealing with similar issues.
