Where We Stand: The Intersection of Public Art and Gentrification
March 8, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
FreeArtBridge is hosting a panel discussion that will bring together local residents, small business owners, artists and community leaders to address how art can be a positive force in neighborhoods like East New York and Brownsville. Can artists and arts organizations help create a more thriving, accessible, creative community for everyone? Or is public art in lower-income neighborhoods inherently gentrifying? And, if so, should that concern override all other potential consequences of public art? These questions will serve as the springboard for what we know will be an exciting, empowering and productive conversation.
Panelists include Mary Rowe, Vice President/Managing Director of the Municipal Arts Society, Quardean Lewis-Allen, the Founder of Made in Brownsville and Catherine Green, the Founder and Executive Director of Arts East New York.
The panel will be moderated by Cindy Rodriguez, Urban Policy reporter at WNYC.
