There are 500,000 active gas wells in the U.S. Each well can be fracked 18 times. Approximately 40,000 gallons of chemicals are used per fracturing, chemicals that include toxins and carcinogens like lead, mercury, hydrochloric acid, and formaldehyde.

In sum: 72 trillion gallons of water and 360 billion gallons of chemicals are needed to run our current gas wells.

Panelists discuss the environmental impacts of fracking and efforts to resist the industry at local and national levels.

The Gaits: A High Line Soundwalk

The Gaits: A High Line Soundwalk is a free, downloadable smartphone application that features a score of electric guitar chords, zen gongs, and more composed by Lainie Fefferman, Jascha Narveson, and Cameron Britt. As participants walk along the High Line, footsteps are turned into twinkling metallic sounds, electric guitar chords, dulcimer notes, water splashes, car horns, and applause.

To join the fun, download the iPhone or Android application and arrive promptly at 5:00 PM. The walk begins on street level below the High Line at Gansevoort and Washington Streets, moves through the park, and ends at West 30th Street.
