Transportation Alternatives, the advocacy organization perhaps most responsible for the opening of New York streets to pedestrians and bicycles, is holding a series of meetings next week to let the public, and community organizations, learn more about the Play Streets program, which is part of the city’s PlaNYC initiative for a healthier New York. The program allows communities to apply for car-free periods on a local street, providing children with safe space to play. Play Streets has been endorsed by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign. There are meetings scheduled in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, beginning Monday:
