recent article on Urban Omnibus discusses a project conducted by volunteer planners to restructure Queens Boulevard, one of the central arteries of the city. The project was born out of safety concerns surrounding Queens Boulevard and necessitated by the fact that municipal planning initiatives, which have to go through the bureaucratic process, are often too lengthy and expensive to yield timely results. The Queens Boulevard project is spearheaded by the Planning Corps, an organization that matches experienced planners with non-profit programs in an effort to bring people together to make a positive impact on their community.
